Imagine a place where people explore life’s big questions, enjoy the arts, and work together to help their communities. The conversation doesn’t end when class is over. It continues in the choices people make and the ways they treat one another.
A worldwide community, connected through local action
You may be discovering New Acropolis for the first time, but our school in South Orange, New Jersey, is part of an international community spanning more than 50 countries. Across this network, people explore philosophy, share cultural experiences, and volunteer in their communities. Source (EN)
What connects these efforts is a simple idea: what we learn should make a difference in how we live and how we treat others. Each local school puts that idea into practice in ways that respond to its community.
Volunteering takes more than good intentions
Have you ever wanted to help but wondered where to start? Caring is a beginning. Being useful also takes preparation, commitment, and a willingness to learn from the people we’re trying to support.
That might mean developing a practical skill, listening carefully to a community’s needs, or showing up consistently over time. Volunteering gives us a chance to turn values such as generosity, responsibility, and respect into actions.
Philosophy in Action Around the World
From helping neighbors meet everyday needs to giving children opportunities to learn and create, local projects bring these ideas to life. The examples below are described in reports published by New Acropolis and its local organizations. They reflect the work of those communities, rather than a list of programs offered at our New Jersey school.
Helping neighbors in Boston, United States
A February 2025 report describes New Acropolis Boston’s annual holiday collection of nonperishable food and toiletries. Volunteers went door to door, and the donations went to a Somerville food pantry and the Somerville Homeless Coalition. It is a straightforward example of people working together to support neighbors facing difficult circumstances. Source (EN)
Learning responsibility together in Pune, India
In March 2026, 18 volunteers from New Acropolis Pune organized activities for more than 45 children at Balgram SOS Children’s Village in Yerwada. Through stories, teamwork, and planting saplings, the children explored kindness, cooperation, and responsibility toward themselves, other people, and the environment. Source (EN)
Growing through the arts in Pará, Brazil
In the Brazilian state of Pará, IPEARTE, the Pará Institute of Education and Art, offers another example of connecting personal development with culture. A June 2025 New Acropolis report describes its dance company receiving awards in three categories at the Pan-American Amazon Dance Meeting. The young dancers’ achievement shows what sustained artistic practice and dedication can make possible. Source (EN)
Making room for beauty and meaning
Picture a loaf of bread beside a lily. One nourishes the body; the other reminds us that beauty matters, too. A full life makes room for both practical needs and the experiences that nourish our inner world.
A book discussion, a dance class, or time spent helping a neighbor can invite us to look beyond our own concerns. Culture gives us opportunities to reflect, express ourselves, and pay closer attention to the lives of others.
An invitation to make a difference
None of us can meet every need alone. But we can choose to bring more patience to a difficult conversation, follow through on a commitment, or offer a skill that someone else needs. The classical approach to philosophy invites us to put what we learn into practice.
These projects reflect the work of local New Acropolis communities in different countries. Here in New Jersey, you can begin by exploring our philosophy courses and joining an Open Talk. The starting point is the same: curiosity, connection, and a willingness to put ideas into practice.
What’s one small act of kindness or service you could make part of your day today?
